Manchester United 3-2 AS Roma: Cunha turns it around, then sees red

Manchester United beat AS Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, a result that looked unlikely after 17 minutes and then became possible once Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha started to pull the game towards them.

Roma were 2-0 up early. MatĂas SoulĂ© scored in the 11th minute, assisted by Rodrigo Mora. Donyell Malen added a penalty in the 17th minute. G. Gasperini’s side had the perfect away start: an early lead, central control and United forced to chase.

Then the match changed.

Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty in the 58th minute after a VAR intervention in the same minute. Cunha scored in the 83rd minute, assisted by Fernandes. Three minutes later, Cunha scored again in the 86th minute, this time assisted by Shea Lacey. Old Trafford had its comeback.

Then came the edge. Cunha was booked in the 87th minute and sent off in the first minute of stoppage time. Match won, player lost for the next European step. That is the whole Manchester United experience in one night: emotion, damage and points.

How United turned it

Michael Carrick set Manchester United up in a 4-2-3-1: S. Lammens in goal; L. Yoro, H. Maguire, A. Heaven and Diogo Dalot in the back four; C. Baleba and K. Mainoo in midfield; A. Diallo, Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha behind B. Mbeumo.

G. Gasperini used Roma’s 3-4-2-1: D. VĂĄsquez in goal; G. Mancini, L. Balerdi and Hermoso in defence; D. Rensch, B. Cristante, M. de Roon and Wesley across midfield; M. SoulĂ© and Rodrigo Mora behind D. Malen.

Roma’s opening phase was clean and ruthless. Mora mattered immediately, providing the assist for SoulĂ© in the 11th minute. Malen then scored from the spot in the 17th minute. At 2-0, Roma had the game exactly where Gasperini teams like it: opponents stretched, tempers rising and duels everywhere.

The temperature spiked in the 20th minute, when Soulé and Fernandes were both booked for an argument. Emanuele Lulli, who had replaced Devyne Rensch in the 21st minute, was booked for handball in the 35th minute. Malen followed with a yellow card in the 42nd minute for a foul. Roma were ahead, but they were also being dragged into a match of fouls and interruptions.

Carrick’s key move came in the 51st minute: Youri Tielemans came on for Carlos Baleba. United needed cleaner possession and better rhythm around Fernandes. They got enough. Fernandes, who finished with one goal, one assist and six key passes, became the hinge of the comeback.

The 58th minute was the first break in Roma’s control. VAR intervened, Fernandes scored the penalty, and Roma’s lead suddenly looked less like control and more like something to defend.

At 75 minutes, Carrick went again: Lisandro MartĂnez replaced Ayden Heaven, and Shea Lacey replaced Amad Diallo. That second change changed the match. Lacey had only 15 minutes, but his numbers were sharp: one assist, one key pass, three successful dribbles from four attempts and four duels won from five. He gave United fresh legs and direct running at the exact moment Roma were retreating.

Roma also reshuffled late. Daniele Ghilardi came on for Gianluca Mancini in the 75th minute, Evan Ndicka replaced Hermoso in the 76th minute, and Santiago Thomas Castro came on for Malen in the 78th minute. United found the gaps anyway.

Cunha made it 2-2 in the 83rd minute from Fernandes’ assist. In the 86th minute, he scored again from Lacey’s assist. No need to dress it up beyond the facts: two goals in three minutes, game reversed.

The Cunha contradiction

Cunha was the best player on the pitch and the most costly one by the end.

His output was elite: two goals, four shots, three on target, two key passes, four successful dribbles and 10 duels won from 19. He gave United the aggression their first half lacked and the finishing their pressure demanded.

But his night did not end cleanly. He was booked in the 87th minute, then shown a red card in the first minute of stoppage time. United got the three points. Carrick now has a suspension problem.

That matters because this was not just a comeback. It was a Champions League league-stage swing. United moved to six points from four games, 17th in the table and inside the play-off places. Roma stayed on four points, 20th, still alive but now carrying the scar of a match they had led 2-0 away from home.

The numbers back the comeback. United created more, shot more and carried the higher xG. Roma were efficient early, but after the break they could not stop Fernandes from finding spaces or Cunha from turning pressure into goals.

Kobbie Mainoo was important in the base of United’s midfield, completing 68 accurate passes from 80 and winning seven of 12 duels. Diogo Dalot also gave Carrick defensive bite, winning 10 of 13 duels and making four tackles.

For Roma, Mora’s first-half role was obvious: one assist, three key passes and 18 accurate passes from 20 before being replaced by NiccolĂČ Pisilli at the 45th minute. Balerdi was their strongest defender statistically, with five interceptions and seven duels won from 13, but the late pressure was too much.

Discipline and substitutions

Yellow cards shaped the rhythm.

Soulé and Fernandes were both booked in the 20th minute. Lulli was booked in the 35th minute. Malen was booked in the 42nd minute. Heaven was booked in the 70th minute. Maguire was booked in the 78th minute. Cunha was booked in the 87th minute before his red card in the first minute of stoppage time.

United’s late game management was also clear. Matthijs De Ligt replaced Maguire in the 88th minute, and Mason Mount replaced Fernandes in the 88th minute. Carrick tried to close it. Cunha’s red card made the finish more nervous than it needed to be.

What it means

United are now 17th in the Champions League league phase with six points, with form reading WLLW. It is not secure, but it is a platform. Their home record in the competition is strong: two wins from two at Old Trafford, seven goals scored and two conceded.

Roma remain 20th with four points, with form reading LWLD. Gasperini will know this was a missed chance. A 2-0 lead away at Old Trafford is a valuable asset. Roma let the points slip late.

At the top, Paris Saint-Germain continue to set the pace after their own statement night, covered here: Villarreal 0-6 Paris Saint Germain: PSG tear through Marcelino’s side in ruthless Champions League statement. Liverpool, also on nine points, face their own pressure test next: Fenerbahçe vs Liverpool: Slot’s Perfect Reds Face Istanbul Pressure Test.

For United, the next step is simple: keep the late conviction, lose the chaos. Cunha delivered the win, but his red card leaves Carrick with a new problem before the next European night.
